I was just alerted that this piece was released quite a while ago.  I had a really good time painting this piece for "The Black Riders" deck in The Lord of the Rings LCG.  Barliman is a sweet, lovely man, one of the people worth fighting for.  I think I came on to this piece as a last minute addition to fill up the deck.  There was a much quicker due date than most,  so this one is quite small.  I stare at it every once in a while (in the pile of paintings standing against my wall) and it makes me happy.  I'm quite proud of this one.

This is a painting I did back in 2012 for the new A Games of Thrones LCG Chapter Pack called The Horn that Wakes.  I had a great time doing this piece.  Evil characters are so much fun to design and create.  Happy Valentine's Day!

Hello Everyone! Happy New Year, sorry it's been so long.  Since the new year I have gotten some much needed relaxation and have taken a short break from painting.  I have gotten some great news professionally though, my paintings "The Golem of Prague" and "Beliefs Mean Nothing" have both gotten into the annual competitions for Infected By Art and the Society of Illustrators West .  These are both very prestigious competitions and I am extremely lucky to be chosen.  A slew of other great illustrators have also gotten in and I wish to congratulate all of them on their success as well. In other news, before the holidays I was commissioned by a friend to do a portrait of his younger brother, Joe, as a Conan type character.  I was given a lot of freedom and had a blast painting this piece.  Here is the final piece:   I have been told that Joe loved the piece, which I named "Joe the Destroyer" but he is calling it, ahem, "The Hyman's Bane...

Happy Solstice Everyone! I have been working very hard lately with a couple commissions due before the Holidays, but I thought I'd show you all my Winter Card image this year. Since last year I produced one of my favorite paintings for my Winter Card, I thought I'd bring back the character and show him in another situation.  This year the Nisse is coming into the barn from a very blustery evening.  I always want to instill a feeling of solitude in these Nisse paintings, a love for his role on the farm.  Also, I want these paintings to show a contemporary time period.  The house that he works for could be from numerous decades, but there are little hints of electricity, or in this case, windmills in the background.  Windmills are everywhere in Denmark, and since this is a Danish character, the windmills give a geographical symbol.  They also act as a somewhat political symbol, as I believe that wind is one energy source our world needs to h...

The Golem of Prague , 12"x 16", Oil on Paper on Masonite, 2013. Back in August, at Gen Con Indy, I was approached by a man who was starting a book called "Lands and Legends".  It is a book of illustrations based on various myths, legends and fantastic places, from all cultures around the world.  I was saying yes to his pitch in no time.  There was already a huge list of amazing illustrators involved and he had a great financial plan for this book that would involve a Kickstarter campaign.  He had a list of ideas for various subjects that would meet his criteria, as I glossed over the list, "The Golem of Prague" jumped out at me and my mind was made up that this was my subject matter.  The Golem has been a subject I have wanted to paint since I came back from Prague four years ago.  I went to a service in the Old New Synagogue (depicted in the background of the painting) with my Wife and Father-In-Law, knowing full well that what was left...

Mantra 2, 18" x12", Oil on Masonite, 2013. I finished this painting a while back, but never got around to photographing it until recently.  this is another piece in my ongoing "Mantra series".  The idea behind the series is to do various free floating still-lives, and make them as dream-like as possible.  They're given black backgrounds and I do many dark glazes over the detailed painting to push it into the black as much as necessary.  This is an image of a flint stone and the fire it creates.  It is meant to be a mantra of our origins as homo sapiens and the evolution that occurred after the discovery of the magic this rock can create.  I don't have this series completely mapped out yet, it's still evolving itself.  I hope to do five of them, but who knows.  I'd like to keep them as images of natural objects, but I'm not sure if that matters.  I'll paint them as they come to me.

Beliefs Mean Nothing , 24"x18", Oil on Paper on Masonite, 2013. Since coming back from GenCon, I have been super motivated to finish a personal piece before Illuxcon, where I will be showing in the showcase Friday and Saturday night.  I have had this composition as a drawing in my work sketchbook for what seems like ages now, and I'm glad I had the time to bang this one out. This piece was conceived from the idea that Creationists are pushing to get their beliefs taught in schools in Texas.  The image is meant to depict a Creationist man clutching to his beliefs, willfully blind, even in the face of scientific evidence.  I also wanted the viewer to get the impression that the triceratops is abandoning the man, as the man abandons the dinosaur.  The triceratops fades from the man towards a more enlightened mind.  The title refers to an idea I have been pondering lately.  It is irrelevant whether someone believes in something; that thing exists at that...
